THE crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State, worsened, yesterday, as party members engaged in a free-for-all at the party secretariat. But the timely intervention of the Police saved the day as an Armored Personnel Carrier APC was hurriedly deployed to the secretariat and men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, to disperse the warring party supporters.
Over 20 policemen led by the Akure Area Commander, Olatoye Durosimi and the DCP (Operations) Edward Ajogun raced to the scene to prevent bloodshed. A fight broke out when some supporters of the factionalised party stormed the secretariat located at Oyemekun road. Loyalists of some aggrieved governorship aspirants led by Saka Yusuf Ogunleye had sacked the state chairman Hon. Isaac Kekemeke on Tuesday, accusing him of anti-party activities.
Sogunleye was appointed the new chairman after and his attempt to take over the secretariat was rebuffed by Kekemeke. Reports had it that Ogunleye’s group, armed with dangerous weapons, stormed the secretariat at noon with the intention of dislodging the Kekemeke faction occupying the secretariat but were resisted.
The supporters of Saka Ogunleye, who were conveyed to the secretariat in one of the party’s 18 seater bus, were shot at by the other camp, which later snowballed to a free-for-all fight. Kekemeke’s supporters had kept vigil at the secretariat chased the supporters of the other faction, who fled in different directions.
Gunshots were fired sporadically leading to a stampede while the busy Oyemekun road was deserted for about 20 minutes until police stationed at the secretariat reinforced. The embattled state chairman, Mr Kekemeke and other executive members were later accompanied to the secretariat by men of the SARS who took over the secretariat.
